Abstract

The article depicts the contemporary views on the correlation between diabetes mellitus and periodontal diseases. Presented theories were formed on the basis of the research on: genetic predisposition, the influence of advanced glycated end products (AGEs) on macrophage receptors, specific microflora, impaired polymorphonuclear leucocyte (PMN) function, alterations in collagen metabolism, microangiopathy and alterations in salivar parameters. In the literature special attention is devoted to the influence of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus on the periodontal tissues. Early diagnosis of diabetes, good glycemic control and continous cooperation between periodontologist and diabetologist may stop the progressive destruction of the periodontal tissues.
